The documents you need for verification depend on whether you’re signing up as an individual or an organization—and whether Stripe also requires address or business verification.

You can find the current list of documents accepted by Stripe (filterable by purpose and country) here: https://docs.stripe.com/acceptable-verification-documents

1) If you're starting as an individual

Stripe typically checks:

  • Identity (ID)
  • Address (if necessary; only if the address cannot be clearly verified through the ID or other information provided)

Typical documents:

  • Passport
  • Identity card (front and back)
  • Driver's license (front and back)
  • Proof of address (if necessary; e.g., certificate of residence, official document, utility bill—depending on the state)

2) If you're starting as an organization

Stripe typically checks:

  • Company/Organization (Type + Name/Address)
  • Representative(s) (Identity)
  • if applicable, registration or tax information (depending on the legal form)

Examples of typical documents include:

  • Letter from the tax office (including the organization's name and address)
  • Extract from the registry (e.g., Commercial Register, Association Register, or Cooperative Register—depending on the legal form)
  • Certificate of Exemption (for Nonprofit Organizations)

3) Note on Stripe terminology (Register)

When Stripe asks for a “commercial register number, this may also refer to the association register number or cooperative register number, depending on the legal form.

4) Prepare documents correctly (so it goes quickly)

Make sure that:

  • everything is clearly legible (no shadows, glare, or blurriness)
  • all pages are included (e.g., front and back)
  • The name and address in the document must match the information in Stripe exactly
  • Files are not password-protected (for PDFs)
