Your backers' data is stored by Startnext and transmitted in encrypted form. Campaign creators can only view this data to the extent necessary to fulfill their contractual obligations (e.g., sending thank-you notes). Payment details (e.g., credit card information/IBAN) are not shared with campaign creators but are processed by our payment service providers for payment processing purposes.
Where is the data stored?
- Startnext stores supporter data in its platform systems (e.g., name, contact information, support and order details).
- Our website and data transmission are encrypted using SSL/TLS (indicated by
https://). - We use AWS for our hosting and server infrastructure; as stated in our privacy policy, the server location for this is Frankfurt am Main.
Who can view the data?
1) Participants (project team)
Backers receive only the information they need to fulfill their contractual obligations under the campaign (e.g., sending a thank-you note).
Typical data includes:
- First and last name
- Email address
- Amount of assistance and date
- Selected Thank You
- Shipping address and, if applicable, billing address
- any project-specific information that participants are asked to provide (e.g., T-shirt size)
Important: Runners will not receive any payment information, such as credit card details or account numbers.
2) Startnext (internal)
Startnext processes this data to provide the platform, process contributions, prevent fraud, and handle support requests. Only authorized individuals have access to this data as part of their duties.
3) Payment service providers (e.g., Stripe)
To process payments, the necessary data is transmitted to our payment service providers (e.g., Stripe) depending on the payment method selected. The specific data processed there depends on the payment method chosen.
Note on the retention period
For commercial and tax law reasons, we are required to retain certain address, payment, and order information for an extended period (typically up to 10 years).
